if you know me at all. i love celebrating.
i love celebrating people. accomplishments. holidays. lost teeth. events. a clean plate from a toddler. blooming plants. fridays. if it brings any ounce of happy . . . you better believe i am celebrating it.
so it goes without saying. holidays are my jam.
i have been known to decorate my house for christmas well before thanksgiving. i guess its the enneagram seven in me. if it has a name. celebrate it.
i actually did not even recognize that about myself until a friend of mine pointed it out to me last year. i just thought everyone was like this. but apparently not. she literally said to me . . . you find a reason to celebrate everything. and i just laughed and said I KNOW!
and you know what. i am not mad about it. of all the things in the world i could be labeled as . . . an over-celebrator is one i will stand proudly behind.
so now that we are officially less than 90 days away from halloween . . . in my book . . . that means it is time to start celebrating. oh you better believe that in this house we have already had several conversations about costumes. we have already browsed the aisles of party city. we may or may not have purchased AND worn some already. we have already taken out the halloween boxes from the closet to decorate the house. i’m just sitting here like now where is the dang candy corn?! it is time people!
so today the rascals and i did something fun to keep the early halloween celebrating going. we decorated our front door in a very halloweenie way. we ran up to party city to grab a few supplies. and then had a ball decorating our door. our mummy door. after all. this is mummy’s house. it seemed funny to me.

i wanted to make sure this was an activity that the boys could really participate in. so i made sure there were steps that required them to use scissors. i mean come on. how else do you bribe little boys to do arts & crafts?
wanna color with pastels? hard pass.
wanna play with scissors? they all come running.
so here we are.
don’t worry i monitored them closely. but boy did they have fun. they were responsible for cutting all the strips for our mummy door. i bought a large plastic tablecloth as party city & let them go to town cutting strips. the best part . . . you want these strips to be messy. not perfectly cut. it makes the outcome so much better. and it takes the pressure off the little ones to cut perfectly. avoiding mummy meltdowns.
we worked together to tape up strips of the table cloth over the entire door. this was the base layer to our mummy. again. we didn’t make it perfect. some were crooked. some were twisted. almost like a mummy unraveling.

the second layer was made of white streamers. again. a staple from party city. we did the same thing with this medium. we just taped side to side. twisted & angled. i loved how the differing textures really gave the mummy some dimension.
the next part. the mummy eyes. and get this . . . we used plastic plates from party city. large yellow for the eyeball. and small black for the eye center. using just tape we adhered the eyeballs on. for these guys try to make them slightly uneven. and cover parts of the eyes with the tissue paper. again. you sorta want it to look like the mummy is unraveling.
the last little touch is the icing on the cake. we snagged two white feather boas from party city & added those for even more dimension & texture. i actually wish i had bought two more to add a bit more. after all. this mummy loves her some accessories. i think it is so fun!
at the last minutes we decided to add a big ol’ heart & make sign that read MUMMY LOVES ME. and while i thought it was equal parts punny & sweet. . . poppy immediately said mom it is not valentines day. halloween is not supposed to be like this. and so the heart came down. but either way. heart or no heart. it is so dang darling. and we had fun creating it together.
